The Bulbdial Clock
This is one of the many things my “blog-backlog” is comprised of: the Bulbdial Clock. Originally an idea by David Friedman, the people at Evil Mad Scientist have taken the idea, modified it slightly and run with it.
Basically, it’s a clock that tells the time on the same principle as a sundial does – only with a few differences. Firstly, the bulbdial has far greater resolution, as seen below – it can tell the time correct to minutes and seconds, not just hours. Secondly, its display is generated not from sunlight, but from three rings of LEDs of varying colours.
The effect is something else:

And apparently even more impressive in real life.
The people at Evil Mad Scientist are considering putting a kit together for sale, so we can all make our own. Hopefully this comes to fruition. In the meantime, you can head over to their site and read a description of how they went about putting it together. There are lots more photos available here.

I love to see things like clocks — that we take for granted as being of a static design — reinvented.
