Hauntology

I’ve been listening to Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti a lot today, after having discovered them through this boomkat review. The album is absolutely stunning and while discussing it with a friend, it raised the question of a recently very prominent and fashionable trend in underground music: emulating sounds of the past, not just in style but in their entire aesthetic altogether. (See Nite Jewel, Best Coast, The Advisory Circle, etc.)

The concept of Hauntology was then brought to my attention by a knowledgeable member of the electronic music community. From Wikipedia:

The idea suggests that the present exists only with respect to the past, and that society after the end of history will begin to orient itself towards ideas and aesthetics that are thought of as rustic, bizarre or “old-timey”; that is, towards the “ghost” of the past. In this, it is has some similarity with the cyberpunk literary movement. Derrida holds that because of this intellectual realignment, the end of history will be unsatisfactory and untenable.

The name and concept fundamentally come from Marx‘s assertion that a “spectre is haunting Europe, the spectre of communism.” Derrida holds that the spirit of Karl Marx is even more relevant after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the demise of communism, that the West’s separation from the ignorance of the suffering still present in the world will “haunt” it and provide the impetus for a fresh interest in communism.

Fascinating!

Goodbye Electronica

Came across a link to a song, “Goodbye Electronica” by Dave Graham, on the electronic music board xltronic tonight. Really, really enjoyed it – lovely guitar work, atmosphere and lyrics. He’s allowed me to share it with you here, saying it’s a “freebie”, so give it a listen and pass it on to anyone you think might enjoy it!

Cassetteboy VS The Bloody Apprentice

Cassetteboy‘s gone to work on The Apprentice:

I’ve been working on this video for a couple of months, on and off.  I watched 45 episodes of The Apprentice (most of them several times), and material from 43 of them made it into the final piece.  Basically, it was a lot of work.

Watch it here:

If you enjoyed it, make sure you check out more of their work at their Youtube channel.

Don’t do this.

There’s a special place in hell reserved for people who take the complete piss at gigs by doing things like this:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Radiohead – Nude (Live at 93 Feet East, London, 2008-01-16)

Well handled by Thom, though, I must say. Reminds me of the Autechre bootleg, Live @ Lees Palace (2008-04-12), a fantastic bootleg in quality and setlist, almost ruined by some stupid bitch who keeps screaming and talking in the left channel… Or the drunken idiots who kept coming up to the bootlegger at Aphex’s 2008 Oxegen Festival gig.

It’s more excusable in the last two cases, but even so — what do you go to a gig for? To experience, enjoy and dance to the music? Or to scream into your poor, resentful friends’ ears any banal shit that comes into your thick head?

Bootleggin’

Thanks to Padraig for bringing this to my attention: a page full of bootlegs of mainly experimental electrinica artists (Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Murcof, Björk and Autechre, to name a few), with a few odd ones (Fugazi, for one) thrown in for good measure.

The legality of this page is questionable, especially since it hosts Boards of Canada’s rare “A Few Old Tunes”, so get on it before it disappears.

Tone Matrix

I found this on reddit, linked to as “Don’t click this if you need to do anything productive today”, so this blog post is already redundant before I even click “Publish”. Despite this, I’m still writing about it – it’s really that great.

tonematrix

It’s basically a matrix of tones (who’d have thought?) represented vertically, with time represented horizontally. For those interested, the scale is A, B, D, F#, A, which goes some way to ensuring that whatever you come up with sounds somewhat pleasant.

Press SPACE to clear. Right-Click for Copy & Paste.

Enjoy, and check out some of Andre Michelle‘s other stuff while you’re at it!
